A Letter From The President

Leadership

What makes an exceptional leader?  This question has been on the top of my mind since becoming the President of Jacobs Management Group, Inc. at the beginning of this year.  It is a privilege to lead such a high integrity recruiting organization and I want to make sure I honor Laura's 22 year legacy of exceptional clients and candidates.  In studying leadership, I have identified 10 top attributes. What would you put on your list?

A Leader:

·      Creates trust.  Their colleagues and clients can count on their motives and know that they come from a place of worthy intent.  Leaders also build trust by establishing credibility and demonstrating they have the needed skills and capabilities.

·      Invents the Future.  A leader excels at creating a vision for the future and communicating that vision to their team.

·      Enrolls and Inspires.  A leader is able to have their team see the possibilities for themselves and how they can contribute to the organization.  This is more than just inspiring action, because a leader can actually be inspiring inaction (as in the case of a cease fire situation).

·      Serves.  A leader serves their team, providing them the tools, resources and coaching they need to succeed.

·      Takes Ultimate Responsibility.  In the end - how it goes rests on the leader's shoulders.  Was the goal achieved?  Was it the right one?  Was the team satisfied in the process? A leader takes complete ownership.

·      Develops Leaders.  This is a trait that I think is a major difference between "Good Leaders" and "Great Leaders".  "Great Leaders" build leaders and take pride when their team members excel and are promoted.

·      Creates the Context.  They know how to start from a blank slate and create an empowering context for those working with them.

·      Focuses on Solutions.  A leader always asks the question - "How can we...?", vs. "Why can't this be done?

·      Lives with Integrity.  They commit to their word and do what they say they will do, even when no one is looking.

·      Builds lasting relationships.  They move up the relationship ladder through professional peers and become trusted advisers.

My goal is to build lasting, integrity based relationships and I look forward to leading Jacobs Management Group as we continue to be a key recruiting partner.  We thrive on contributing to our client’s success by adding outstanding talent to their teams, and building our candidate’s careers by placing them at top notch companies.  We will maintain our hands-on approach, managing the recruiting process in the professional manner you deserve.  Securing industry specific candidates by recruiting, leads, referrals, past relationships and our current database of over 250,000 industry leaders will remain our priority.  We are thankful that we continue to have over 90% repeat business from managers in their current positions, or from those who move on to new roles and continued the relationship with JMG because they were satisfied with our services.  Going forward, we are here to earn your respect one placement at a time.

Why might a search assignment go awry? There are many reasons. Two primary stumbling blocks are an inability of the search consultant to communicate with the hiring authority, and the hiring manager not being aware of important issues from the candidate's side. Typically, this occurs when a company prevents contact with the direct hiring authority, and limits crucial business information that enables us to manage the search process. Candidates will speak candidly with us and communicate concerns or issues they may never raise with you, the prospective employer. As the recruiting expert and a third party facilitating the process, we can sense when there is resistance from a candidate. JMG, Inc. can relay any hidden issues to you, and we (you and your JMG, Inc. consultant) can then determine an appropriate resolution that is in the best interest of your company.

I hope that you have an excellent season as the economy rebounds.  Please call us with your assignments as you find the need to build your team.  I welcome your thoughts on how we can continue to build our partnership and can be reached at ckraft@jacobsmgt.com.
